Language
Receptive language is a child's ability to understand what is spoken to him or her, while expressive language, is their ability to use language to express their thoughts and feelings. A child who has an Expressive Language Disorder may have difficulty naming objects, putting words together into sentences, asking questions, using appropriate grammar, or retrieving specific words. A child who has a mixed Receptive-Expressive Language Disorder, has difficulty with both understanding and use of language. In addition to having difficulty with the aforementioned expressive language tasks, children with Receptive-Expressive Language Disorders may also have difficulty following directions, identifying pictures or objects, answering questions and comprehending what they read.
